Mahjong Table Etiquette: 12 Unwritten Rules of the Game
Mahjong is a social contract as much as a game. Every regular table runs on unwritten rules — break them and you will hear about it. Here is the etiquette that keeps you invited back.
Handling Tiles and Discards
- Name every discard clearly as you place it — “three bam”, not a mumble.
- Place discards in neat rows in front of you so everyone can read the table.
- Never touch another player’s rack or peek at their tiles.
- Do not hover your hand over a tile you might discard — decide, then place.
- Return misdrawn tiles honestly; everyone makes wall mistakes.
Calling and Winning
- Call promptly — before the next player racks their tile, or the tile is dead to you.
- Say “wait” clearly if you are considering a call; the table will pause.
- When you win, show your whole hand and let the table verify it against the card.
- Lose gracefully and win quietly — nobody enjoys a victory lap.
Keeping the Table Happy
- Keep phone use away from the table; the game moves at conversation speed.
- House rules (money, food at the table, strict vs friendly dead-hand calls) belong to the host — follow them.
- Teach newer players gently. Everyone at the table was once the slow one.
