American Mahjong Strategy: 10 Tips That Actually Win Games
Luck deals the tiles; strategy wins the evening. These ten tips cover the decisions that separate players who win monthly from players who win yearly.
Tips 1–4: The Opening
- 1. Enter the Charleston with three candidate hands, exit committed to one with a backup.
- 2. Never pass tiles that fit two of your candidates — pass only true orphans.
- 3. Count jokers and flowers before you pick a category; they are your hand’s budget.
- 4. Prefer exposed hands while learning — more calls, more reps, faster learning.
Tips 5–7: The Middle Game
- 5. Read exposures like headlines: two exposed pungs tell you the opponent’s card section — defend accordingly.
- 6. Exchange for exposed jokers whenever legally possible; jokers are options.
- 7. Track your own outs: know exactly how many of each needed tile remain unseen.
Tips 8–10: The Endgame
- 8. Late in the wall, discard tiles already visible in pairs — dead tiles are safe tiles.
- 9. If you cannot win, play to not pay: fold into safe discards early, not on the last wall.
- 10. When one tile from mahjong, say nothing and change nothing — telegraphing costs wins.
