How to Set Up American Mahjong: Step-by-Step for Beginners

A correct setup makes the whole game run smoothly. Here is the exact sequence American tables use, from opening the case to East’s first discard.

Step 1: Seats and East

Each player takes a rack and a mahjong mat. Choose seats any way you like, then pick the first East (dealer): a common method is each player rolling the dice once — highest roll becomes East. East sits wherever they are; winds are not seated in American play. After each game, the deal passes to the player on the right.

Step 2: Wash the Tiles

Tip all 152 tiles face-down into the center of the table. Everyone reaches in and swirls them around for 20–30 seconds — this is “washing the tiles.” Confirm every tile is face-down before building walls.

Step 3: Build the Walls

Each player builds a wall in front of their rack: two tiles high, 19 stacks long (38 tiles). The four walls form a square in the middle of the table. Details and common mistakes are in how to build the mahjong wall.

Step 4: Break the Wall and Deal

East rolls both dice and counts that many stacks from the right end of their own wall, then breaks the wall there. Starting at the break, each player in turn takes 4 tiles (2 stacks) at a time, going around until everyone has 12. Then East takes 2 tiles (the top 1st and 3rd) and each other player takes 1. East holds 14 tiles; everyone else holds 13. See the full dealing guide for the exact tile math.

Step 5: Organize Your Rack

Stand your tiles on the rack and sort them: suits together in ascending order, then winds, dragons, flowers and jokers. Look at the card and circle 2–3 candidate hands your tiles already lean toward.

Step 6: The Charleston and First Discard

Run the Charleston passing sequence and the courtesy pass (covered in our Charleston guide). East then discards the first tile, names it aloud, and the game is on. You are playing American mahjong — the full rules live in our complete beginner’s guide.
