How to Declare Mahjong: Calling the Winning Tile Correctly
You have 13 tiles and draw the perfect 14th. What happens in the next thirty seconds matters — here is how to declare, verify and get paid without a dead-hand disaster.
Two Ways to Win
Self-pick: you draw your winning tile from the wall. Say “Mahjong” (or “jong”), lay your full hand down, and everyone pays double. Win on a discard: call the tile as it is thrown, declare mahjong, and the discarder pays double while the others pay single. Either way, the hand must match one complete line on the card.
Show and Verify
- Lay all 14 tiles down, grouped by combination, next to the card line you are claiming.
- The table checks: correct tiles, correct suits per the card’s colors, correct X/C exposure status.
- Pairs contain real tiles only — no jokers.
- Then payments happen per the scoring rules.
When a Declaration Is Invalid
- The tiles do not match any line on the card.
- The suits violate the card’s color pattern.
- You called a tile for a concealed hand (other than the winning tile).
- Your rack has the wrong tile count — too many or too few.
- You declared on a tile that was already racked by the next player.
The Cost of a False Mahjong
A false declaration makes your hand dead: you sit out the remainder of that game. Worse, it reveals your hand to everyone. So before you say the magic word, count to fourteen, check the line twice, and confirm your suits. The full win flow, including payments, is in how to play American mahjong.
