How to Get Better at American Mahjong: A 30-Day Practice Plan
Mahjong improvement is not mysterious โ it is reps plus reflection. This 30-day plan turns a casual beginner into the player others ask for advice.
Week 1: Make the Card Automatic
- Daily 10 minutes: shuffle 13 random tiles, name your three best candidate hands in 60 seconds.
- Memorize the category layout of the current card, not the hands themselves.
- Play at least one full session, exposed hands only.
Week 2: Charleston Discipline
- Before every pass, say out loud what each tile is for โ pass only true orphans.
- Track how often your post-Charleston hand is your final hand (target: under half โ flexibility wins).
- Drill blind-pass judgment: what did passing unseen cost you?
Week 3: Defense and Reading
- Each game, pick one opponent and narrate their probable section after every exposure.
- Practice a deliberate fold once per session โ feel how little it costs.
- Start counting remaining outs for your two most-needed tiles.
Week 4: Review and Consolidate
- After each session, write down one decision you would replay differently.
- Play one session of 3-player games for extra reps.
- Teach a newer player one concept โ teaching exposes your own gaps.
Keep the Momentum
After 30 days, cycle the plan monthly with harder goals: concealed hands, jokerless attempts, faster card reads. Support your practice with the hand chart, strategy tips and a good mahjong book.
