How to Host a Mahjong Night: Setup, Snacks and Seating
A great mahjong night is 20% tiles and 80% hospitality. Here is the complete hosting playbook, from the table up.
The Physical Setup
- A square card table (34–36 inches) seats four comfortably; add a second table for 5–8 guests.
- One American mahjong set per table, plus the current NMJL card for every player.
- A mahjong mat per player to quiet the tiles — see our mat guide.
- Good overhead light; players are reading tiny print for three hours.
- A side table for drinks — liquids and tiles do not mix.
Food and Drink
Serve finger food that leaves no grease: nuts, grapes, pretzels, cookies, veggie cups. Save saucy anything for a real break. Full menu ideas are in mahjong night food ideas, and themes in mahjong party ideas.
Seating and Rotation
With one table, just play. With two tables, rotate winners: after each game, the winner at each table moves to the other table. It mixes skill levels and keeps conversation fresh. Agree on stakes and house rules out loud before the first wall is built — five minutes of clarity saves the evening.
