How to Play American Mahjong with 3 Players
One player bailed on game night? Three-player American mahjong is fully playable, faster, and honestly excellent practice for reading the card. Here is what changes.
What Stays the Same
Tiles, racks, the card, calling rules, joker rules and scoring are identical to the four-player game. Walls are still 19 stacks per player — with three players you simply build three walls (114 tiles) and leave the rest of the tiles washed in the middle as extra stock, or build four walls and play with a dummy fourth wall for drawing. Both conventions are common; agree before you start.
The Charleston with Three
- Option A (most common): skip the Charleston entirely — deal and play.
- Option B: run a three-way pass: right, left, then a courtesy pass with the player across the empty seat.
- Either way, no blind passes are needed, and joker rules are unchanged.
What Feels Different
- Games are faster — more draws per player per round.
- More tiles per player means bigger hands complete more often; quints become realistic.
- Defense matters less, offense matters more — someone usually wins before the wall runs out.
- East rotates every game as usual, passing to the right.
Why Beginners Should Love 3-Handed Play
You see more tiles, complete more hands, and get more reps reading the card per hour than in any four-player game. Pair your practice with how to pick a hand and you will outpace your study group quickly. Two players only? See our 2-player variant.
