How to Use Jokers in American Mahjong: Rules and Pro Tips
Jokers are the most powerful tiles in American mahjong — and the most misunderstood. Master these five rules and you will never waste one.
Where Jokers Are Legal
A joker substitutes for any tile inside a pung, kong or quint. A kong of “5-dots” can be four real 5-dots, or three 5-dots plus a joker, or two 5-dots plus two jokers. Jokers make quints possible at all — there are only four copies of any real tile.
Where Jokers Are Illegal
- In a pair — pairs must be two real identical tiles.
- As a single tile — singles must be the real tile.
- In the Charleston — jokers can never be passed.
- From the discard table — a discarded joker is dead and cannot be called.
The Joker Exchange Rule
If any player has an exposed combination containing a joker, and you hold the actual tile that joker represents, you may exchange them on your turn: hand over the real tile, take the joker into your hand. You may even do this immediately after calling that player’s discard. Exchanges are the main way jokers change hands — watch every exposure for jokers you can liberate.
Joker Strategy for Beginners
- A jokerless hand pays double at most tables — consider going jokerless when your draws cooperate.
- Do not burn jokers early on a weak hand; they are your pivot insurance.
- Track exposed jokers: each one is a future exchange or a warning about someone’s hand.
- In quints, more jokers = more flexibility, since the real tiles may be discardable bait.
