American Mahjong Tiles Chart: Identify Every Tile (Printable)
New players lose games because they cannot find the tile they were just shown. This chart covers every tile in an American set โ print it and tile recognition stops being a problem.
The Complete Tile Inventory
| Family | Tiles | Count | Notes |

| Craks | 1โ9, Chinese characters | 36 | Red character = 10,000 (wan) |
| Winds | N, E, S, W | 16 | Letters printed on tile |
| Dragons | Red, green, white (soap) | 12 | Soap is often blank-framed |
| Flowers | Flower & season designs | 8 | All interchangeable |

The Tiles Beginners Confuse
- 6-dot vs 9-dot โ rotate the tile; the pips tell you which end is up by convention of the set.
- 1-bam (the bird) vs a flower โ the bird is a suit tile; flowers say their names or show bouquets.
- Soap (white dragon) vs a blank spare โ soap usually has a frame or corner mark; blanks are spares, not playable.
- Green dragon vs 8-bam at a glance โ slow down; they cost people games.
How to Drill Tile Recognition
Spread all 152 tiles face-up and sort them into families โ five minutes, twice. Then have a friend name tiles while you point. Two sessions of this and you will read racks at game speed. The full family breakdown is in American mahjong tiles explained.
Print and Keep
Laminate one copy for your setโs case โ it doubles as an inventory checklist when packing up. Pair with the rules cheat sheet for a complete beginner print kit, and check the glossary for tile nicknames.
